2000)
We began our trek this morning from Batesburg, SC on Rt. 178. The TV
stations in Columbia did a complementary job covering the purposes of
our journey. As soon as we mounted our bicycles, people came up to talk
with Danny and Charles. This continued throughout the day. There are
so many people who have battled cancer. The likelihood of getting cancer
is one out of every two men and one out of every three women. Early detection
and treatment is the single most important step. Danny takes time to
share his experiences with each person that talks with him. We would
share their names and stories, but today, none would give us permission.
The
heat was our biggest struggle today. We were able to pedal smoothly
and powerfully. Even up hills we are now able to press on at 21 mph.
Danny’s
health is good. As we past the cornfields it was obvious that the lack
of rain and high heat has damaged the crop. It also hurt us today.
We reached Orangeburg in the afternoon, took a break, and continued on
to
Harleyville. This was done in hopes of reducing the mileage on Friday.
We will stay in Orangeburg. Friday we will reach Goose Creek.
On Saturday we plan to depart from the Days Inn on North Rhett and
Highway 52 by 8:30 A.M. We will travel Rivers Ave. to Meeting Street.
Then we will turn left onto Spring St. There we will make a short stop
for brunch, then cross the James Island Connector to the parking lot
at Ft Johnson Road and Folly Road. Our motor home will be set up. Please
look for this 34-foot motor yacht with a 16-foot trailer. We will depart
from the lot about 12:30. We plan to ride slowly from this point to the
beach. We expect to arrive near the Pier on Folly and dip our front tires
by 1:30. Then we will head to the end of the Pier where a podium will
be set up.
We look forward, with great excitement and anticipation, to seeing
all of you.
