After over six weeks
on the road, we enjoyed a Sunday afternoon with FAMILY - Danny,
JR’s. This is only the second time since
we left home that we have enjoyed a home cooked meal with happy
children, pets, and the life style of the family. The other was
with Officer A.J. Beck near Four Corners, AZ.
We began our day
with Charleston’s WCSC TV, Channel 5’s staff
interviewing Danny and Charles at the home. The setting was the
back yard picnic table. We reviewed many of the highlights of
our trip. This included Relay for Life speeches that Danny has
made, the sessions with the media and press, and a lengthy review
of the guest book messages.
The guest book messages were printed so we could read all of
them. They totaled over 40 pages. The camera crew asked us to
discuss some of the messages that impressed us. The videotape
will be used to help compose the program to be aired on Sunday,
May 28th on WCSC, Channel 5. The e-mails come from many that
have been affected by cancer. Danny explained that our trip is
a Celebration of Hope for the families and individuals
that have been suffering. As Danny and Charles read the memos
from all over the world, it was obvious that folks that have
been impressed by Danny’s efforts and their messages have deeply
touched the hearts and souls of Charles and Danny. The emotions
and tears were revealed from deep within, particularly by the
notes from children.
Charles’s efforts
for the ride are to raise funds for Happy Days and Special
Times. He hopes to raise and earn $30,000.00,
or a dollar a mile. His goal is to touch 1,000 people to donate
a penny a mile, or $30.00 and mail their checks to Happy Days
and Special Times. (www.happydaysnspecialtimes.org) There are
many messages from children that have endured the pain and overcome
the fight against cancer, some have not. Charles and Danny are
greatly touched by these memos from the young.
The day ended with
a feast prepared by Danny , JR. and his wife Bridgett, Channel
5’s staff were first to enjoy the tasting
as they had to leave early. The secret family recipe was prepared
with love. The ribs, chicken, potato salad, and super baked beans
were only topped by the fresh bread and the dessert of home made
chocolate pie. We especially enjoyed the home and family environment.

We are only 12 days away from our families. We hope to pass
Knoxville in two days then be in Waynesville, NC by Friday for
their Relay for Life.
Happy Mother’s Day
to our Moms and especially all those Moms that have helped
lead those with cancer through their battle
towards a happy and healthy recovery. The best medicine is
the love, devotion, and pride that a Mother can give to a child
or family member. Moms really do know best!
