Start time: 8:58 A.M.
Distance today: 59.2 miles
Average speed: 14.1 mph
End time: 4:08 P.M.
Top speed: 37.8 mph
Temperature and weather conditions: The air was damp and cool this morning
when we began due to the heavy rain last night. The wind was not a factor.
Total trip distance: 1,785.2 Miles (since start on April 2,
2000)
We started early today, as compared to most days. Floyd found a route
that helped us avoid I-44. Floyd has the title (on business cards) of
Nava-guess-er and Advisor. It is amazing. He knows all the roads like
it was his neighborhood.
As
Danny and Charles rode, they quickly reached the Missouri State line.
The excitement about departing Kansas was saying good-bye to the cows.
The only cows we saw today were the ones that some of the crew had for
lunch or dinner. One of us eats veggie!
We will cross the Mississippi River tomorrow. It really feels like
we will, without a doubt, make it home soon. We are soaring with the
eagles.
We are 22 miles west of Springfield. Tomorrow we expect to reach 50
miles east of this town. Tuesday we may take off. Floyd is a real fan
of country music, and Danny is as well. So we may take a side trip to
Branson, Mo. Branson is only 27 miles south. Floyd had a low grade fever
and went to sleep as soon as we arrived. We all hope he is better. It
is unlike Floyd to miss a meal.
The timely start allowed
us to complete our day early. This was super. We had hopped to be able
to get on line, but the hotel we’re in does
not have a phone in the room; can you imagine? There are only 12 rooms
is the motel. But there is a super antique shop attached to the office.
The shop is larger than the motel complex.
There are many nice advantages
of old, small motels. First, they are out of the way, so we do not
have to fret over our bikes being taken
off the top of the trailer. We do lock them, but if someone really wanted
them they would be gone. The price is well within our budget. The guests
get lots of attention, since the number is small. There is always a free
washer and dryer. And the TV doesn’t get too many channels, so there
is no desire to stay up late (no names mentioned).
But the best advantage is the small diner or family style restaurant.
Sean, Danny, and Charles had a large and filling feast for $20.00 - including
tip, dessert, and drinks.
