Temperature and weather conditions: Strong head wind form start to end.
The wind was out of the East-South East. It was blowing at 20 mph with
gusts too much more. The temperature was fine. We drank a lot of water
during this battle with the wind.
Total trip distance: 1,726.0 Miles (since start on April 2,
2000)
Our
route today followed Hwy. 400 through Parsons, KA. Parsons was torn by
a tornado three weeks ago. The town was selectively demolished. On one
corner a single building was leveled, yet the other three structures
were untouched. Down the next block the roofs of three homes were taken
off, but the houses were fine. The homes were not next to each other,
but separated by a home. The devastation was close to what we saw in
Charleston after Hugo. Parsons is a small town, but it seemed to take
most of the day to pass through.
The
last town we travel through in Kansas, before we reach Missouri, is
Pittsburgh - the town we’re in tonight. The cows we have enjoyed so much
should be gone for a long time. This picture, hopefully, is the last
of them
for a long time.
Danny and Charles both showered as soon as they arrived and took a
short nap. They were worn out.
Monday, tomorrow, we will be in Missouri. Slow progress is made each
day. The effort today was much more than other days, except for the climb
up Wolf Creek Pass. We hope the rainy front passes tonight and the wind
shifts to a more favorable direction tomorrow.
