Kansas
We
started the day by attending Easter services at The First Baptist
Church in La Junta, Kansas. Charles started the day with a ride
across the odious flatlands of Kansas passing stockyards filled
with cattle and seeing an occasional pheasant take flight from
it’s hiding place in the grass beside the roadway. We had the pleasure
of spending time visiting and having breakfast with Elke and Michael
Stockdale, Danny’s nephew and wife who drove from Clovis, New Mexico
to spend some time with us. Michael is the son of Danny’s sister
Patsy, who lives in Fayetteville, NC. It was her husband, and Mike’s
Dad, Phil, who passed away from undetected prostate cancer in 1997.
Danny felt and still feels the loss of this fine person. To honor
Phil and raise the awareness of the need for early screening and
detection of cancer was one of the main motivations of this trek.
It was Danny’s desire to share the impact of his experiences with
cancer and to explain to people that early detection of cancer
is critical to successful treatment and diagnosis.
Due
to the good weather we were able to cover a great deal of ground
today. We reached Kansas about 2:30. We left La Junta, Co. and
reached our destination city, Coolidge, KA, but because there
were no hotels we road on until darkness and cold set in.
We are now in Garden City, KA. When we depart in the morning
we will have the motor coach take us back to where we stopped
(no city to give you a reference). We plan to ride to Dodge City,
if not further, on Monday.
Tuesday we will have a cable to power the computer, so we will
be back on line each night we can gain access. We dearly miss
being able to meet and talk with you each night.
We are all in great health, wonderful spirits, and very excited
to be away from the mountains and the cold! We welcome the flat
lands.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
