Total trip distance: 739.2 Miles (since
start on April 2, 2000)
Howdy!!! Our band of reckless bicyclists and support team woke up bright
and early at 7:00 to enjoy another complimentary continental breakfast
at the Hampton Inn in the beautiful, but desolate town of Kayenta, AZ.
We then ventured to Monument Valley in the Goosenecks National Park to
see the beautiful rock formations such as the " Mexican Hat ", and the
great strength of the San Juan river that had once cut through dirt and
sheer rock to provide a view ( 5,000 feet straight down ) overlooking
an array of highland desert and muddy water rapids, that made us all
feel small once again.
We are all awaiting future sights considering some of us have never
been too far from home. Anyway, back to our eventful day. We departed
Monument Valley around 12:00 P.M. Following an extremely filling picnic
in the RV, we then proceeded northeast towards Four Corners with tumbleweeds
skirting across the highway in front of our determined riders. They’re
determined only to get to the next motel to sleep.
We
entered New Mexico around 6:30 according to the welcome sign that read, " Thanks
for visiting New Mexico". Our day must have been going too well because
we ended up stuck on a shoulder ledge in the entrance of the Four Corners
National Monument - Utah, AZ, CO, NM. Thank goodness we have some people
skills, because we had just about every tourist in the New Mexico helping
us with this dilemma, ranging from oriental camera-lovers to daisy-duke
wearing Germans.
An
officer from the Arizona Department of Public Safety even offered his
assistance to ease our suffering predicament. At first we thought he
would charge us with destroying public property because we tore up the
pavement - not only with a dragging trailer, but a dragging motor as
well.
He turned out to be one of the nicest people that we have encountered.
His name is A.J. Beck, and if you need to know anything about the local
sights or just want to rap with a cool local, he’s your man!. We all
bid you a good night from Cortez, CO. God Bless!
