Humor in the Navajo Nation

Kayenta We continued our trek through the Navajo Indian Reservation today. We rode from Tuba City, Arizona to Kayenta, Arizona, a distance of 75 miles. Due to the cold and windy weather we bundled up into jackets, ear warmers, face masks, pants, and thick gloves. The road was mostly level parceled with a few large hills. Sheep and cows grazing on the roadside along with the rolling hills and the deep jagged gorges carved by the Little Colorado River created an excellent backdrop as we pedaled hard.

Elephant's Feet Elephant's Feet

We passed two large pillars of stone, which side by side mimicked a pair of elephant’s feet. This enormous natural wonder caused rider Charles Fox to exclaim, "I can now die a happy man knowing good and well that there is something out there bigger than my tummy", and communication director Sean Leonard to pronounce, "… damn if only my girlfriend were that trim." As you can well see the Elephant Feet National Monument moved some of us to speak truths we would have otherwise kept quiet about.

We reached Kayenta about three in the afternoon. We paid a visit to the local True Value Hardware Store to pick up some screws for the motor home and a new battery for Floyd’s pacemaker. Next stop was the clothing store where Charles, Lydia, Roman, and Sean purchased clean shirts, pants, and underpants for Danny to replace the old filthy clothing that had to be discarded due to the odious smell they emitted.

Dino feet After the excursion in the clothing store we ventured outside and met Chuck, a Navajo Indian. Chuck was sobriety- impaired at the time of our meeting, but we still managed to make out a word or two he said. He said something about coming down from the mountain and how glad he was to meet us. He told us about Monument Valley National Park and all of the things to see there. Our conversation with this insightful man was very informative and should prove to be of great aid during our adventure to the valley tomorrow.

Around 4:45 in the afternoon we checked into the Hampton Inn. Lydia prepared a filling meal (we call it our daily picnic) consisting of salad and sandwiches. That lady can make a mean turkey sandwich! The remainder of the evening involved eating a taste- bud stimulating dinner at Burger King and a good night’s rest.
