Tuesday
was a non-ride day due to the very long and hard day yesterday.
Danny’s chest cold contributed to today’s
postponement. When we arrived in Williams, Az., he went to see
Dr. Yard. The result was an order that Danny is not to ride for
3 days until his bronchitis clears. It is interesting that we had
allowed 3 days in the Grand Canyon.
Tomorrow Roman and Charles will ride from Williams to the Grand
Canyon. Danny plans to add 5-6 miles to each day’s trek, once
he is 110% to cover the distance missed.
Since we did not ride today, we had lots of time to sightsee.
Williams was the last town to allow the interstate to cross through
its city. Their stand in court and face to face with the Federal
Gov. was a long fight. Once the interstate cut through, Route
66 was doomed.
The
town of Williams has many wonderful shops and sights. We each
visited many while Danny rested. The most interesting and fun
place was our evening meal at Cruiser’s, a restaurant who’s original
building was constructed in 1910. The bathroom has an old 60’s
VW bus door that separates the stalls and a pair of truck tailgates
that provide the same separation. The walls provide an interesting
gallery of old road and service station signs and the dining
rooms have a variety of old gasoline pumps for décor.
Since
Danny could not walk the 5 blocks in the cold from the motel
to the restaurant, the Cruiser’s staff (Kevin) was kind enough
to come gather us. He drove up in the restaurant’s '51 Suburban
and provided transportation to and from the restaurant.
